Physical activity no matter how simple or difficult is essential for a
healthy well-balanced life. It keeps us in top shape whilst making us healthy
and feeling good about ourselves. It is also just as important for disabled
citizens as it is for the able-bodied. Wheelchairs provide some limitations but
they shouldn’t be a hindrance to get you involved in any form of physical
activity. There are also a variety of sports that are quite popular amongst
accessible and mentally challenged citizens. They’re usually an adaptation of
normal sports but with obvious modifications to some of the rules to accommodate
with the players mental of physical disability. The following sports are the
most popular and range from activities that require lots of physical labor to
activities that anyone regardless of age or physical limitation can do.
Wheelchair Basketball
Accessible sports or wheelchair sports are believed to have begun in
1946 during the Stoke Mandeville Wheelchair Games and wheelchair basketball
began in 1956. The sport rapidly grew and in 1973 there was even a Wheelchair
Basketball Federation (or IWBF) to oversee the sport. The rules are mostly
traditional basketball rules but the main difference being the rules of
traveling and double-dribbling. In wheelchair basketball when a player touches
his wheels more than two times after receiving or dribbling the ball, that is
consider traveling. A player must pass, bounce, or shoot before he or she can
touch the wheels again. Another important component of wheelchair basketball is
how they even out the teams. They try to make it as fair as possible so
depending on the severity of the disability (1.0 being almost completely
paralyzed and 5.0 is able-bodied). Everyone can participate but the system is
intended to have these factors in mind to balance the teams out and ensure
fairness.
Wheelchair Tennis
As wheelchair basketball is just like regular basketball, wheelchair
tennis has a few variations but is basically regular tennis with a twist. You
need different equipment such as a more aerodynamic wheelchair so you can
maneuver easily. This sport gained much popularity in the 1970s and 1980s and
is played by two or four players and the rules are simple, hit the ball back
and forth.
Accessible sports and all sorts of recreation for those with
disabilities are encouraged by Wheelers as they help provide an active
lifestyle. Keeping your accessible son, daughter, relative or friend in shape
is pivotal for a long and healthy life.
