6 Lucky Dishes to Serve Up for New Years

If there’s one holiday that most of the world celebrates in one way or another it is New Years!  The ringing in of a new year brings out many traditions and where there are traditions you will most likely find food.  Below are a list of the luckiest foods new years has to offer.  Who knows popping a few of this dishes may make your 2016 that much better.

Beans:

I’ve heard of beans being called the “Magical Fruit” but the “Lucky Legumes”? Apparently in many parts of the world legumes are seen as a symbol of money.  The swelling of legumes represent financial rewards.  In Italy you will be hard pressed to not see a family that indulges in Lentils and Sausages for New years.

Cooked Greens:

When you think of cooked greens your first thought may be “Down South”.  Truth be told eating greens for New Years can be found in numerous countries around the world.  The reasoning behind this you ask?  Simple cooked greens resemble folded money.  Gives a whole new meaning to “making that cabbage”.

Grapes:

If you’ve ever visited a South American country during New Years you will most likely experience the eating of the grapes which takes place at Midnight.  For each stroke of the clock you are to eat a grape which comes out to a total of 12 grapes, one representing each month.  Although this tradition started off in Spain it quickly spread to other countries such as Portugal as well as former Spanish and Portuguese colonies.

Pork:

The pig is a symbol or prosperity, or over indulgence.  Its rich high fat content signifies wealth and abundance.  It’s no surprise then that pork is eaten in many countries.  The United States is well known for serving up delicious Roasted Ham for New Years.  Countries like Germany, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Spain and Austria serve up the delicious swine in a variety of ways as well.

Fish:

Long before refrigeration made meats king of the holidays fish could be found in many households as the main entrĂ©e for a holiday meal.  Fish especially Cod had the ability to preserve well, this led to it becoming one of the most popular proteins being served up during major holidays.  Fish ‘s scales are also said to resemble the shimmering of coins representing wealth.

Cakes:

It might be the shape but cakes have been showing up on New Years dinner tables for quite some time.  Ring shaped items comes into play a lot when discussing the ending and beginning of a year.  The cake with its circular shape represent this idea perfectly.

Wherever you may be this year for New Years make sure to partake in that countries food customs.  You’ll be surprised what new traditions you may end up making your own.

The Sandwich!

Where would my life be without the sandwich.  Ever since I can remember this treat has been a major part of my life.  From peanut butter and jelly sandwiches stuffed into my school lunch box to greasy sloppy Philly cheese steaks to an everything bagel with lox and a smear of cream cheese the sandwich possesses many faces.

So where did it all begin?  Rumor has it that John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich is considered the father of the sandwich.  I find it hard to believe that he was the first person to ever consider slapping some tasty meat in between some type bread but I digress.  According to the Wall Street Journal the sandwich is considered the biggest contribution to gastronomy that has come out of Britain.

It’s amazing how the sandwich has changed since its introduction to the world.  There is literally a sandwich for every moment in the day.  On the run in the morning and want a quick bite? then you should consider trying a New York classic, the bacon egg and cheese on a roll.

Had a rough night of drinking? then go for a Cheese Steak Sandwich.  The fat content will be sure to line your stomach against those harmful shots of tequila you took earlier.

Feeling a bit exotic? then you might want to take a bite out of a Banh Mi a traditional Vietnamese sandwich which contains a wide arrange of foods.  Anything from sardines, tofu, pate, eggs, pickled vegetables, roasted pork and hot peppers can be found in this sandwich.

At the end of the day though nothing beats my classic, hot piping corned beef and pastrami on a toasted piece of rye with just a touch of mustard and sauerkraut.  Now that’s living.  A sandwich is truelly mans best friend giving us much needed energy at a fraction of the cost of most meals.  Plus it is completely portable.

If you’re throwing and event and want some unique and classic sandwiches for you guest you may consider contacting Brindle Room catering.  They have a wide variety to choose from or you can always just build your own!  For their following services contact Brindle Room Catering today.

Turn Your Garage Into a Halloween Haunted House

With Halloween right around the corner Hudson Valley Overhead Doors and Operator thought it would be fun to provide you with some simple steps you can take to convert your dreadful garage into a haunted house of horror for all the little ones that will be passing by your home this Halloween.
Clean up:

Before going all in and purchasing all your horror gear, clean up your garage.  Try to make the most room possible.  If you have another location where you can hold your garage items great!, If not try pushing your equipment as close to the wall as possible.  Any items that you have hanging from the walls can be left in place.

Make a Plan:

Winging it will not work when creating a haunted house.  Your best option is to make a simple map showing where you will be directing your little visitors.  By making a game plan you can use your garage space to the maximum.  If you have a small garage try creating a simple curved walkway, if you have a larger garage you can actually create separate rooms with different themes.  Either way with enough spooky items you’ll ensure that the kids will have a great time.

Go and purchase some goods:

If you go to your local Halloween store you will be able to find just about everything you need.  Anything from props to costumes can be found here.  So don’t hold back and go nuts purchasing the spookiest items available.

You’re going to have to hit the hardware store:

It’s not all just props and candy.  You will have to purchase some simple items to properly set up your haunted house.  Walls can be made using simple black heavy duty plastic bags which you will be hanging from thick string and hooks that hang to your wall.  While you’re at it you might consider purchasing some plywood and paint to make a mini crib or a coffin.

Music:

Don’t forget to hit all sensors.  Part of the scare is to have a kick ass soundtrack with scary moans and Halloween music.  Buy a few cheap speakers and put that CD on a loop and you should be all set.

Europe’s Most Accessible Countries

Lately there has been a lot of talk about of accessibility in America, more specifically Orlando Wheelchair VanRentals. But what if you eventually want to visit the old continent and are traveling with an accessible loved one, what then?

Europe is home to over 50 countries most of which have their own language and exceptional things to see and do with an accessible loved one. Being that it has a population that is aging, public awareness has influenced greatly in that Europe has accessible tourism for people with both physical and mental disabilities. Wheelers presents Europe’s most accessible cities.

Germany, Europe’s most accessible country
Just like in the US there are cities in Europe that set the bar high when it comes to accessibility and activities for everyone. Berlin is one of those cities that everyone has been talking about. The German government has had to rebuild their infrastructure from the ground up since 1990 and have been working with the public since 2000 to create a more accessible society. They have managed to build a fully accessible public transport system, broad sidewalks and tactile guidance systems at road crossings, they are also making great efforts to become 100% accessible and plan to have this completed by 2020.

Stockholm, Sweden a close second
For Berlin, being Europe’s most accessible city was no easy feat. They had to go against some major contenders such as Stockholm, Sweden which was for years Europe’s most accessible destination. The city has managed to implement pedestrian crossings with access ramps and contrast markings as well as accessible playgrounds. They also created numerous navigational apps for people with impaired vision to allow there to be an activity for all. All elevators, subway stations, busses and hotels are fully accessible and cater to the needs of anyone with any type of disability.

Accessibility in Rome
Although the city’s floor is cobbled on every corner, the city has made major efforts to create a more accessible environment by building ramps on the pavements and full on most hotels, restaurants as well as churches, galleries and museums. It may not have a Disney theme park so you won’t be able to solicit Wheelers Orlando Handicap Accessible Van Rentals but Rome is a great city that combines both traditional and modern architecture.

Accessible Paris
For all you Paris lovers you’ll be happy to know that although the city is not known for its cleanliness, the two major attractions (which also happen to be a couple of the most visited places in the world) the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower are fully accessible. The streets may be steep and cobbled but there are scooters and lightweight wheelchairs available for rent and public transportation is also accessible. So when you feel you’ve taken advantage of Orlando Accessible Van Rentals and wish to live a different experience, visit Paris.

Accessibility in London
Streets in central London feature wheelchair ramps and all hotels have 5% of their rooms set up for mobility impaired guests. Public transportation can be a mess during peak hours but all public transportation is fully accessible. If you find that you’ve visited Orlando many times using Wheelers Orlando Handicap Van Rentals London would be a great destination to visit.

WheelersVan Rentals may not have extended their coverage to European cities but they still offer their services in most major American cities and their Orlando Mobility Van Rentals service is being offered with free airport pick up and curbside delivery to ensure your safety and comfort.

My Three Favorite Cities in California

As an accessible frequent traveler I need to know beforehand that the places I visit will be up to par with the standards I require and by that I mean that my presence will not be a burden and I can do things on my own. My mom and I recently came back from California and for those of you international readers (who have most likely heard of California) it the most populous U.S state home to one out of eight people who live in the U.S home to 38 million people. It is recognizable by it being the state where the city of Los Angeles is, Disneyland and Malibu.  But I was sure to stay clear of these places mostly because I’ve already been and because I’ve heard great things about San Francisco and San Diego. I’m aware of how far they are from each other but thanks to Wheelers Van Rentals and their California Wheelchair Van Rentals, we were able to fly out to California from New York and be picked up at the airport by a pretty cool almost brand new accessible van.

Santa Rosa, California
Santa Rosa Wheelchair Van Rentals
Our trip started by getting picked up in Sonoma County Airport by a very nice guy named John which handed us the keys. We just solicited Wheelers Santa Rosa WheelchairVan Rentals service and went to visit some old friends of my mother’s and stayed with them for a few days. I was quite hesitant mostly because it wasn’t one of the places I wanted to go but turned out to be a pretty cool city. Being a huge fan of Snoopy and Charlie Brown as a kid I was ecstatic to find out that Santa Rosa is actually the birthplace of Peanuts creator, Charles M. Schultz and they’re really proud of this too. There is a “boutique” style museum dedicated to the creator of Peanuts and his work over the years. It features his work and activities for kids not to mention a look back at his early work before Peanuts. Another positive note is that it is directly adjacent to Peanuts Themed Redwood Empire Ice-Arena which is a fun place for kids and adults of all ages.

San Francisco, California
San Francisco Wheelchair Van Rentals
Our next trip was an hour away and was to the ever popular hipster capital of the world (no offense, you guys are great) of San Francisco. We used the same vehicle but in case you’re in San Francisco you can just contact Wheelers and ask about their San Francisco Wheelchair Van Rentals which was on special at the time. San Francisco was a little more fun and it provided many more attractions but my favorite was hanging out on Pier 39, eating clam chowder, lobster and catching a Giants game. Pier 39 is the most popular destination within San Francisco being home to numerous restaurants and to all you animal lovers out there, you’ll be happy to hear that there are sea lions. Also, if you’re accessible and looking to visit “The City” (I suggest you call it that when you go and not anything else) it’s good to know that transportation in this city filled with hills is almost all accessible which means getting around is not an issue.

San Diego, California
San Diego Wheelchair Van Rentals
It took us almost 9 hours to arrive to San Diego but the calm winds and pristine beaches made it instantly worth the long trip. San Diego has its famous ‘Big Bay’ and ‘Sea World San Diego’ as its main attractions but there are other things to do as well that may be of your liking. There are Pandas at the San Diego Zoo, Whale Flukking and visiting a good amount of small time breweries. San Diego has a wide variety of accessible activities from the accessible Legoland to the educational museums of Balboa Park.
San Diego attractions keep visitors coming back for more and it’s no wonder why it’s known as “America’s Finest City”. All of these activities attract both children and adults of all ages to this amazing city where they get to see exotic animals from all over the world.

The state trip like the one we went on is a good way for you to bond with loved ones and even get to know yourself. We may all be Americans but in every state you get to see different cultures and traditions that come with the region. This was all possible thanks to Wheelers Van Rentals. With their yearly specials and constant state specials you know that you can count on them for all sorts of cross-country travel. Wheelers offers Santa Rosa Wheelchair Van Rentals, San Francisco Wheelchair VanRentals, San Diego Wheelchair Van Rentals but outside of California they offer their services in all 50 states and plan to have an office in every major American city in the not so distant future.

Physical activity no matter how simple or difficult is essential for a healthy well-balanced life. It keeps us in top shape whilst making us healthy and feeling good about ourselves. It is also just as important for disabled citizens as it is for the able-bodied. Wheelchairs provide some limitations but they shouldn’t be a hindrance to get you involved in any form of physical activity. There are also a variety of sports that are quite popular amongst accessible and mentally challenged citizens. They’re usually an adaptation of normal sports but with obvious modifications to some of the rules to accommodate with the players mental of physical disability. The following sports are the most popular and range from activities that require lots of physical labor to activities that anyone regardless of age or physical limitation can do.

Wheelchair Basketball

Accessible sports or wheelchair sports are believed to have begun in 1946 during the Stoke Mandeville Wheelchair Games and wheelchair basketball began in 1956. The sport rapidly grew and in 1973 there was even a Wheelchair Basketball Federation (or IWBF) to oversee the sport. The rules are mostly traditional basketball rules but the main difference being the rules of traveling and double-dribbling. In wheelchair basketball when a player touches his wheels more than two times after receiving or dribbling the ball, that is consider traveling. A player must pass, bounce, or shoot before he or she can touch the wheels again. Another important component of wheelchair basketball is how they even out the teams. They try to make it as fair as possible so depending on the severity of the disability (1.0 being almost completely paralyzed and 5.0 is able-bodied). Everyone can participate but the system is intended to have these factors in mind to balance the teams out and ensure fairness.

Wheelchair Tennis

As wheelchair basketball is just like regular basketball, wheelchair tennis has a few variations but is basically regular tennis with a twist. You need different equipment such as a more aerodynamic wheelchair so you can maneuver easily. This sport gained much popularity in the 1970s and 1980s and is played by two or four players and the rules are simple, hit the ball back and forth.

Accessible sports and all sorts of recreation for those with disabilities are encouraged by Wheelers as they help provide an active lifestyle. Keeping your accessible son, daughter, relative or friend in shape is pivotal for a long and healthy life.

Easily Achieve Lasting Longer in bed with 5 Simple Tips

Sex can be very intimidating, especially if it is your first time with someone.  The thoughts that go through a person’s mind can render them helpless.  Unfortunately premature ejaculation is a problem that some men have to deal with.  And it isn’t a problem that goes away with age.  Studies have shown that in all age ranges premature ejaculation is common amongst 30 percent of men.  So if your 18 or 50 you still have the same odds.  Fortunately there are some tips that can help break you of some habits that bring on premature ejaculation. You’ll be lasting longer in bed in no time.

lasting longer in bed

Quick Fixes

This might sound obvious but wearing a condom can reduce your chances of premature ejaculation and have you lasting longer in bed.  As most men will tell you, wearing a condom takes makes you penis less sensitive.  Try to steer clear of condoms that are labeled as extra thin as this will defeat the whole purpose.  Some condoms also come equipped with desensitizing gel inside the condom.

Apply Pressure

There is a way to stop from ejaculating prematurely by applying pressure at a specific time and specific spots.  When you feel yourself close to ejaculating pull out and immediately stop any kind of stimulation to your penis.  Try applying pressure to the area where your shaft meets the head of your penis.  Apply pressure for 10 seconds and release.  Wait 30 seconds and then resume.  Continue this until the desired time.

Reduce anxiety.

For many men anxiety can contribute to premature ejaculation.  Sure lasting longer in bed is good but remember chances are that your partner probably cares more than just the timing of your orgasm.  There are many ways to make sex pleasurable, there are many things to explore.  Try kissing, caressing and exploring your partner’s body.  Instead of viewing sex as achieving an orgasm, think of it as a way of connecting with your partner.  Once you see it this way you will see that your anxiety levels will drop.

Think Unsexy Thoughts

Here’s an oldie but goodie.  One you feel like you’re getting close to the edge start thinking about something distant.  Stray from thinking about stressful situations.  Think about something unsexy, like math or baseball.  Don’t concentrate on this too long though, just enough to catch your composure, about 10 seconds or so.  Afterwards go back to concentrating on your partner.

Change Positions

There are some positions (namely the missionary position) in which men are more prone to premature ejaculation.  Missionary position and back entry positions put the most pressure on men’s glands.   Try using more passive positions.  Have your partner be on top or have intercourse side by side.

These are all great tips but if you continue seeing that you are lasting less than a minute during intercourse it might be time to get some medical help.  A common route for lasting longer in bed is a topical anesthetic.  Preboost sells a product which comes in wipe form.  You simply wipe your penis down with Preboost product before intercourse which makes for lasting longer in bed.  Contact Preboost today to find out more.

Wheelchair Friendly Cities

As tourists most of us only have to worry about making sure we are accommodated at a comfortable hotel, finding good places to eat and maybe having access to a rental car to do some sightseeing. Wheelchair users however must worry about encountering more problems such as stairways, narrow doors, making sure bathrooms are accessible and transportation. This last one is big because there are many major cities in the country that aren’t as wheelchair accessible as they claim to be. In some cities it’s almost impossible for a wheelchair user to find transportation, an affordable accessible hotel let alone go for a city tour. Wheelers Accessible Van Rentals is here to tell you about America’s most accessible cities.

San Francisco
This northern California city continues to set the bar high when it comes to innovation, quality of life and accessibility is no exception for San Franciscans. Despite it being a city full of hills and compact size it has grown to be very accommodating for our accessible brothers. The three major transit providers are very helpful given that they cover the entire city and are accessible streetcars, trolleys and buses. On the negative side the city’s most famous cable cars are not accessible. Hotels have also improved their facilities to provide fully accessible roll in showers that run for under $100. Enjoy the city by the bay by tasting their chowder along fisherman’s wharf, Ghiarardelli Square for shopping and watch the cable cars turnaround while having a delicious Irish coffee at the Buena Vista CafĂ©.

Boston
Second on our list we have Boston, MA and it is known as one of America’s oldest cities and home of big sport franchises like the Boston Red Sox and the Boston Celtics. It is a colonial era city and it’s a great place to learn about our nation’s history. It is very popular for avid sports fans, food lovers and history geeks but its most popular attraction is the Freedom Trail which happens to be accessible in its entire length. It begins in Boston Common in the center of the town and it is a trail made of a red line on the sidewalk and goes by many historical locations such as Granary Burial Ground, Paul Revere’s house, Old North Church and Faneuil Hall. It ends up at the battlefield of Bunker Hill. Keep in mind that the upper floor of Paul Revere’s home is not accessible, nor is the monument tower at Bunker Hill. For sports fans there’s Fenway Park which you can reach via an accessible subway station which happens to be America’s oldest system.

Chicago
Personally, many of us prefer the windy city over the big apple for numerous reasons and one of them being a bit more compact and its downtown is also walkable with many things to do and see. Chicago has a large selection of hotels and transit options are an advantage for wheelchair users. All busses are equipped for wheelchair riders. Chicago’s main attractions such as Willis Tower, Navy Pier and Grant Park are all fully accessible. Another plus is Chicago is an accessible sport fan’s dream with both baseball stadiums being very friendly to the mobility challenged sports fan. Chicago’s food scene is also quite popular with Gino’s East being big for deep dish pizza, Fast Track Hot Dogs and be sure to visit Chicago’s shopping centers as well. The windy city has hotels for any and every budget. Wheelchair users are recommended the Embassy Suites hotels with breakfast included.

There are a variety of cities all over the world that are modernizing and raising awareness to become accessible and looking towards the future, let’s hope that in time every city in the world opens their doors to everyone regardless of physical or mental limitation. The doors are opening for all of us to plan amazing trips with our handicapped loved ones and no longer will a disability deter us from having the vacation of our lifetime.  Luckily there are also companies that rent out their equipment to make sure you can travel with nothing holding you back. Wheelers Van Rentals provides state of the art vans at competitive prices in all 50 states. Their services include Texas Wheelchair Van Rentals, Florida Wheelchair Van Rentals, Wisconsin Wheelchair Van Rentals, Michigan Wheelchair Van Rentals and NorthCarolina Wheelchair Van Rentals. Internet of Things Making Big Moves

Want to know the next big breakthrough in technology?  No it’s not cloned armies, AI robotics or even space tourism as many would have you believe.  Nowadays it is all about connectivity.  The whole reason the internet blew up the way it did is because of its ability to connect a vast amount of people through its networks.  Decades later and we are still seeing that integration is the way to go.

internet of things

I’m speaking about the Internet of things and its ability to affect countless fields.  We are talking software developer, hardware developers, home usage, office usage even major factory usage.  There is a movement going on which is trying to lead us down the path in which all our systems are interconnected.  All this talk is grabbing the attention of people with deep pockets.  In 2013 alone Internet of Things companies attracted more than one billion dollars in venture capital.  According to the New York-based venture capital firm that’s an increase of 11 percent from the previous year.

The big fish in the pond as usual is Google.  Google made quite the entrance into the IoT world by snatching up the company named Nest Labs.  Nest Labs, a Silicon Valley start up company was bought by Google for…. Hear this! 3.2 billion dollars.  Now if that doesn’t say dedication to the Internet of Things I don’t know what does.  The idea is for one day to be able to run everything from your wearable device.  Google envisions a world where one day you will be “driving”(more like riding) their autonomous cars, wearing their Google smart watches and their Smart glasses and managing your home entertainment and home energy systems.  Sounds like progress to me.  The assumption is that these new devices and networks will create new jobs and bring more ease to our daily lives.

Despite all the recent talks about IoT and the deals struck by major companies to acquire companies that are developing software and hardware for such a system to progress certain questions remain.  The economist points to the fact that estimates on the rise of internet connected devices vary widely.  Gartner firm estimates 26 billions will be online by 2020, while ABI research puts that number at 30 billion.  Industry leader Cisco estimates the number even higher, coming in at 50 billion devices.  Now you might be saying that the Internet of Things is overblown but the reality is this ideas time has come.  For the last few decades our infrastructures have been changing in order to accommodate such a change.

We still have some major hurdles to jump before perfecting this idea.  Challenges that need to be addressed are the effectiveness of communications between devices.  Security is also of a major concern.  With so much information whizzing by us through the use of Wifi a strong implementation of security needs to be set.  The billions of people that will be using these devices need to be ensured that sensitive information is not being hacked into.

Huge international companies are making great strides in this field along with local and national businesses.  Cyber Technology have become experts in their integration systems.  They have applied these skills to their Closed Circuit NYClosed CircuitCT, Home Security Systems CT, Home Theater Systems CT, Home security systems NY, Home Theater Systems NY and New York Security Alarms services.  For more information on their products contact Cyber Technologies Inc. What’s good in Missouri?

When most of my foreign friends talk about the United States, chances are they’ll refer to a big touristy attraction or location in a big and popular state. New York will spring up a connotation or two, as will Florida, California and Illinois. These are the most frequented states in the US along with other popular destinations such as Las Vegas (Nevada) and The Grand Canyon (Arizona) but if you talk to foreign tourists about states like Missouri, chances are they don’t know where it’s located or things to see. I’ve actually lost track as to how many of my foreign friends have asked where Missouri even is. Missouri might not be as flashy or easy to locate on a map like the aforementioned states, but it does in fact have its perks and its interesting history makes it worth researching and even visiting. It has a pretty cool list of locations and attractions for everyone to enjoy and luckily, they’re all wheelchair accessible! Missouri Wheelchair Van Rentals by Wheelers Van Rentals makes your trip to the Show-Me State a lot easier.

Kansas Cities
Before we begin let’s answer the question on most people’s minds and that is, “What’s the deal with Kansas City and where is it exactly?” Short answer is there are two Kansas Cities one in Kansas and the other in Missouri separated by an imaginary state line and the Missouri River. I’m not going to go into discussion as to why this is or how it came to be (we’ll save it for our next article) so let’s continue.

Kansas City, MO BBQ
Along with the Carolinas, Texas and Memphis, Kansas City is one of the most popular barbecue regions in the country. These 4 places have held an intense but friendly rivalry as to which barbecue takes home the prize as the best in the nation.  KC barbecue is characterized by a wide variety of meats such as pork, chicken, turkey and sometimes fish. They also have a wide variety of methods of preparation such as slow smoking and traditional barbecue (which is a slower method using indirect heat created by wood fueled fire for an extended period of hours). These ingredients and methods don’t sound too different when compared to the other barbecue capitals but the crusty tips of a brisket of beef or pork are distinctive to the city of Kansas City MO. There is a cornucopia of restaurants but if one managed to catch my attention it was Jack Stack Barbecue we went with our uncle (which happens to be quadriplegic) and not only was the food spectacular, meat off the bone ribs but we were immediately served and the service was excellent.

Sports Franchises
It may not be the most trophy winning city compared to Boston, LA or New York City but Kansas City MO is home to some pretty prominent sports teams playing in the MLB, NFL and MLS. Professional sports teams in Kansas City include the Kansas City Chiefs (3x AFC champions and one time super bowl winners 1969), Kansas City Royals (2 AL pennants and 1 World Series 1985) and Sporting Kansas City in soccer (2013 Champions). The chiefs began their career as the Dallas Texans in 1960 but moved to KC in 1963 their home stadium is Arrowhead Stadium. The Royals were founded in 1969 and are the only major league KC team that has always been from KC and have always been called the Royals. They defeated their intercity rivals in the St. Louis Cardinals in the “Show-Me Series” in 1985.

There you have it, Missouri may not have as many things going for it compared to more visited states but it is remembered for having received the most powerful earthquake to strike the US in 1811, (shook the area of a million square miles), the state held the first Olympic games on US soil in St. Louis 1904, Missouri became the first state to free its slaves, Dr. Pepper was introduced to the world at the world’s fair in 1904. Missouri’s Department of Conservation is also working to remove barriers that prevent people with disabilities from enjoying the outdoors and so far it has been a success. The state has been building new facilities and renovating older properties. This makes it easier for everyone regardless of age or physical limitation to enjoy the Show-Me State. WheelersVan Rentals and their Missouri Wheelchair Van Rentals service takes you to these places and much more at competitive prices. They also provide WisconsinWheelchair Van Rentals, Florida Wheelchair Van Rentals, North CarolinaWheelchair Van Rentals, and Michigan Wheelchair Van Rentals.

Fashion Trends that Need to Go

We all know that fashion comes and goes and history has shown that just because an article of clothing has a place in your closet today, doesn’t mean it will have a place tomorrow. In fashion such as in show business clothes have their 15 minutes of fame and some will be long forgotten, buried away, never to be worn again. What is hot today may be tacky tomorrow and some trends are just so bad that it doesn’t take years for us to realize that people are making complete fools of themselves. Now, you might be thinking to yourself that you can’t think of anything right now that you can say is tacky and/or ugly but shall I remind you of crocs? Did you not live the era of harem pants and do you not see women wearing them today? Btw, harem pants were immortalized by the one hit wonder Mc Hammer in the 1990s. So now that we’re on the same page I will introduce to you not just the tackiest but ugliest fashion trends any of us have ever seen.

Mullets
Wow, what can we say about the first member of our list of fashion don’ts that hasn’t been said already. The term was coined in 1995 by the Beastie Boys and has been around ever since to describe a haircut who’s philosophy states “business in the front, party in the back”. It has been around long before then being used by glam rockers such as David Bowie and at one point was the most popular hair do. Unfortunately for the mullet though, it is now only used by rednecks and Germans. It is distinguishable because of the shortness in the front and long in the back but let me tell you this, it is easily the most ridiculous hairstyle around. No sane person living in New York City should be caught dead with this haircut. The reason why it is on the list is because recent sightings lead us to believe that this horrific excuse for a trend seems to be coming back and not just for men..

Miniature Backpacks
Now this is ridiculous and I never saw the need or the use for this accessory. You don’t have to be in your
40s to remember this, they were popular in the late 90s and surprisingly, I saw one last week. Some trends seem to appear out of nowhere while others permeate the cultural zeitgeist by means of celebrities and the entertainment industry. Tiny backpacks were the norm after the very successful 1995 film Clueless and were ubiquitous in the years following the release of the film. This article made the list for two things, the first being that we will wear anything as long as it’s “in” and the second being its lack of practicality and use. I mean who in their right mind would carry a backpack for the sake of just carrying it? Back in my day a bag was used to keep useful items, school supplies and trips not carrying lipstick and nail polish. The banality coupled with the uselessness makes this an article of fashion worthy of ridicule and shame.

Adult Onesies
We’ve all heard of the social media trend known as ‘Throwback Thursday’ or ‘TBT’ and for those of us who don’t know it is the trend of uploading old pictures on to Facebook and Instagram so everyone can kind of compare before and after. I’m all for remembering childhood memories but actually wanting to go back to childhood is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen and that’s exactly what the owners of adult onesies seem to be trying to do. This garment seems to resemble baby clothes more than it does fashion. This garment is made of soft fabric and covers you from head to toe. Let’s face it, keeping one in our closet does sound nice but as an outfit to sleep in but never ever wear outdoors.

Only time will tell how long some of these trends will last and whether or not they get replaced with other even more ridiculous ones but in the meantime it is important to keep in mind fashion dos and don’ts. Luckily at Red Cap Cleaners a Poughkeepsie tailor, fashion trends and your personal style are both taken into consideration when choosing your perfect outfit. Poughkeepsie tailoring is done by many but very few do it like Red Cap Cleaners. With 4 convenient locations, you won’t find a Poughkeepsie Tailor like Red Cap Cleaners. They also offer DryCleaning Poughkeepsie to have both of these errands done at the same location.

2014 World Cup to Introduce High Tech Gear

In the recent decades camera technology has been used in various fields with different results.  Some of these technologies have been used against us as an intrusion of privacy while others have been implemented for our own safety.  Take for example Cyber Technologies and their NewYork Security Alarms and New York Alarm Systems services. Cyber Technology has been protecting homes for well over a decade.

Besides the obvious use of surveillance cameras we have started to see them find their way into sports.  With the 2014 World Cup around the corner a new argument is taking place, whether or not cameras should be used to detect if a soccer ball has actually crossed the goal line. The bottom line is FIFA has already made up its mind on this issue, but it seems fans and officials are about 50/50 when it comes to trusting the outcome of a sporting event that some fans cling to feverishly.  After all we are speaking about an event that comes around every 4 years and holds in its balance the communital glee or grief of a country.

The new system being introduced by Germanys Goalcontrol has been at it for quite some time, giving FIFA the guarantee it needed to continue with the project of relying on technology rather than officials to dictate the game.  Goalcontrol went through a probation period in which it successfully detected 68 goals scored during the FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil 2013.  FIFA had 4 companies in mind but in the end went with Goalcontrol because of its ability to meet the requirements put forward by FIFA.  When compared with the competition GoalControl's technology won out because of its flexibility and functionality with any goal -- it can detect any type of ball, and no modifications have to be made to the pitch.  Goalcontrol is also able to detect a balls movement to within at least 5 millimeters.  The company will be able to achieve this feat during the 2014 World Cup by using 14 cameras --  7 aimed at each goal – to measure with absolute precision if the ball in fact crossed the goal or not.
For reason of interference FIFA decided that the best option would be for only the referees to receive a notification if the ball passed the goal line.  This means that the technology needs to be able to make a decision and then transmit a wireless signal to the refs (without interference from countless wireless devices) within one second of the play.  Although a difficult task, Goalcontrol has passed all its test with flying colors.  Only time will tell if this is the way to go when it comes to sport events and cameras.
One thing is for certain, cameras have made our lives a lot better by giving us security and peace of mind.  Cyber Technologies has always been in the front of the game when dealing with home surveillance and alarm systems.  For more on their New York Security Alarms and New York Alarm Systems services feel free to contact Cyber Technologies today.  Cyber Technologies also services the tri-state area with their Westchester Alarm Systems, Fairfield Security alarms and New York City Security Alarms services.

Tacky Trends

Over the years, fashion has showed us to never become attached to our articles of clothing. We’ve seen trends come and go and sometimes we see old pictures of ourselves and say “What the heck was I thinking?!” The good thing is you’re not alone. Fashion is one of the most profitable industries out there and we’ve all seen ourselves wearing one trend or another. Popular styles come and go but we have jotted down some fashion trends that will live in infamy. Some articles of clothing or accessories that really make us question the role the media has in choosing what we wear. If you consider yourself a trendsetter or a follower, we have taken the liberty of listing the worst fashion trends of all time. Don’t laugh at your peers and don’t get too excited because chances are, one day, you’ll be laughing at yourself too!

Fanny packs

It’s not like we’re starting in order of the tackiest article but it just so happens that this had to be first on the list. They are unflattering, dorky and used to point out a tourist from a mile away. They are used as an accessory to carry ones money, camera, phone and miscellaneous items. Fanny packs reached their peak in the 1990s and were originally used above the buttocks (hence the name fanny). Despite the name, most people use them above the waist on their front side due to the number of people being pick pocketed. To us, they’re acceptable only at the gym as they are convenient for people that have to have their phones and wallets with them while they’re working out. However, outside the gym in the year 2014 there is no reason why anyone should still be wearing one.

Leisure Suits/ Baggy pants

We had to divide this one into two separate articles of clothing because of their similarities. Suits are timeless but the pants that are worn with leisure suits make us remember horrible hair dos and dance moves that I hope most of us have forgotten (I say this whilst listening to jive talking). Pants in the 70s we colorful and tight (oh so tight). We remember these pants and immediately remember chest hair (in men I hope) and medallions. This is ironic because just ten years hence, in American prisons one of the most everlasting trends would be born. Baggy pants began in the 1980s and were used to identify members of each gang in prison. The trend of wearing baggy pants later spread to the streets of larger American cities, then the smaller cities, followed by rural areas until they conquered the world. Leisure suit pants and baggy pants dominated the bottom half of America’s closet for 30 years and we hope they’re both gone the way of the dodo bird.

Harem Pants

For those of us who thought Harem Pants had met their demise and were to buried along with M.C Hammer’s career, guess again. Harem pants are originally from the Arabian Peninsula and are a weird breed between a skirt and a pair of skinny jeans. They are easily the pant version of a mullet and there is no reason why people are still wearing them. They were popularized back in the late 1980s by singer M.C Hammer and were known as Hammer pants. We all made fun of Hammer’s pants but in recent years new artists have found a way to incorporate these pants into shows and their everyday lives. Both Heidi Klum and Gwen Stefani have been spotted with Harem pants and I hate to break it to you ladies but you look ridiculous. Justin Bieber and Korean pop sensation PSY have used them in their concerts back in 2012.

Knowing how to dress is not a given, it’s a gift. Society has such a grip on our decisions that the majority of us follow trends in order to be accepted or feel we fit in. If you do not wish to be a part of society’s rules, there are certain things you can do. Visiting a Poughkeepsie tailor would be a good start. A tailor takes the ideas you give him and creates suits and outfits that are personally made for you. If you feel our article is wrong and you want to continue wearing harem pants and leisure suits, this is a job for Poughkeepsie tailoring by Red Cap Cleaners. For over 60 years they are the Poughkeepsie tailor you can count on. With 4 locations to choose from you can count on Red Cap to be your best bet when it comes to looking your best. Call today.
