Pivotal Tips for a Healthy Septic System

If you’re reading this, chances are you own a home and are learning to cut costs in places that you never considered when you were just renting. Your property is made up of many different systems that make up the foundation of your house and keep everything running smoothly. One of those systems is your septic system which is a silent hero that doesn’t receive the appreciation it really should. We mostly consider our sound systems, state of the art blenders and refrigerators with 7,000 compartments (ok, that was hyperbole but you get the point) but I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone flaunt their septic tank and surrounding areas. Your septic system if not taken care of properly can overflow causing thousands of dollars in repairs as well as affecting the aesthetics of your home. Here are some tips to have your property in top-top shape.

First and foremost the most important part of your septic system is the septic tank itself which is a large sealed underground container that receives, treats and settles human waste. They are low maintenance and may last for 20 years or longer and will add value to your home if you can show that it is functioning properly. Septic systems can also keep your loved ones safe because a neglected septic system can overflow causing leaks and harmful chemicals and bacteria to be released into the air. At least once a year your septic tank should be analyzed and inspected by an expert to make sure everything is running smoothly and the amount of water you’re using you isn’t harmful to the tank. A septic system is the manifestation of the water you use in your everyday life.

The first tip is to limit the amount of water that enters the system. The lower the volume of water, the more efficient it will be. For starters, only wash full loads of clothes and dishes. This will not only help both your septic system and will help you save a little more money every month on utilities. Take shorter showers, wash clothes only when you have a full hamper and install water conserving toilets. Looking around for leaks and drips is also fundamental as most of us ignore these things but they can save you money every month, not to mention help the planet. Squandering water causes a constant influx of water into the septic system.

If you’re using a garbage disposal at your home remember that the debris is not broken down completely and will accumulate in your septic tank causing a buildup of sludge in the bottom of the tank. When this happens, you have to increase the number of inspections and pumps done on your septic tank. Who would’ve thought but nature may also pose a threat and cause damage to your septic system. Make sure you avoid planting trees, bushes or large shrubs over any element of your septic system. The root of these elements will clog piping and damage your septic tank. Avoid parking vehicles or any large appliance over the septic tank as it won’t support the weight of any average vehicle.

Limiting the water that enters your septic tank ensures the safety of your septic system, family and your pocket for longer periods of time. If you’re worried about the status of your septic system remember that there are companies that offer inspections and worse case scenarios, offer complete septic tank changes. 1. It is easy to neglect a septic system. I had an experience where I didn't pay attention to how much water was entering my system. It ended up causing some damage that could have been avoided. http://www.seswastewater.com

  2. Yes, the famous septic tank, which I didn't know existed in my front yard, until two weeks ago. I've lived in my home for 22 years and I never knew there was a septic tank buried in my front yard! Also, I like how you say, only wash full loads of clothes and dishes because it helps our septic system and help us save money, as well. I've always done this because it made sense to me, but now I know it helps in more ways than just saving water. Also, you mention our kitchen garbage disposal's food, which we dispose of, actually goes to our septic tank and can clog it. This, in turn, can cause septic tank damage too. This is all pretty new and amazing to me, but it also makes sense. Thanks for all the much need helpful information.

  3. Thanks for the septic system advice. I didn't realize that stuff from the garbage disposal could build up in the septic tank! Next time I am doing dishes, I will be more careful about what I put through the garbage disposal.

    1. Casey, you make a good point about the importance of watching watching what goes into your garbage disposal. I never realized that the food you put in there can build up into the septic tank. It seems like it is very important to monitor what is going in your tank to make sure there is no damage cause d. http://econocycle.com.au/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=7&Itemid=13
